The New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Organizer, Henry Nana Boakye, has responded to the expulsion of party members who were discovered to be endorsing an independent candidate.

Boakye explained that a national executive meeting resulted in a consensus rather than the decision being made exclusively by General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong.

On November 20, 2023, he stressed in an interview with Peace FM that the decision to exclude party members who backed an independent candidate was a national one and represented the position of the party’s leadership as a whole.

He clarified that the party lacked an official flagbearer at the time Alan Kyerematen, a former member of the NPP, decided to run as an independent. Thus, there was no need for disciplinary action against members supporting Kyerematen at that time.

“At the time that Alan wanted to go as an independent candidate, we didn’t have a flagbearer, so there was no need to sack someone who supported an independent candidate.

“As of November 4th, we have an officially elected presidential candidate, so we have to base our decisions on the party laws to take such actions,” he said.

The National Organizer emphasized the need of abiding by party regulations, especially in light of the NPP’s verified flagbearer. Boakye claims that endorsing an independent candidate violates the party’s stated policies and calls for disciplinary action.

“This letter, let me say that it is not only Justin Kodua Frimpong who authoritatively wrote the letter but rather we went for a national executive meeting, and all the party leaders decided that this is the way to go. So, he is carrying the message of the national executive committee,” Boakye added.

In a November 20, 2023, statement issued by the party and signed by its General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, it is stated that Hopeson Adorye, Nana Ohene Ntow, Boniface Abubakar Saddique, and Yaw Buaben Asamoa have automatically lost their party membership for publicly endorsing a candidate other than the duly elected Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
